Good to know as an expat

  • Most Dutch banks ask for a BSN (citizen service number) and a Dutch address. You get both when you register with your municipality.
  • Some savings accounts work with a current account at any bank. Then you do not have to move your salary.
  • The deposit guarantee covers € 100,000 per person per bank. It does not depend on your nationality.
  • In the Netherlands you pay no tax on the interest itself. Savings count towards your wealth in box 3 of your tax return.

Can I open a Dutch savings account without a BSN?

Some banks let you start without one. ABN AMRO and ING let you open an account first and give your BSN within 90 days. Most other banks ask for it before you open an account.

No. The rate depends on the account and your balance, not on where you are from.
